The World of Makeup

The world of makeup is not as simple as some may think; fail to realize the actuality of its complexity and you could end up looking like a wannabe runway model with a two-toned face and horrendous red lipstick. But if you take the time to read the books on the artistry and you practice like hell then someday you might figure it out; take into mind that you must practice. If you have ever been told that make up is all about the artist then I’m sorry but you've been misguided. Yes, of course Bobbi Brown is god-like at makeup compared to a makeup virgin but what most girls fail to realize is that the quality of products and tools can make the difference between an amateur look and a gorgeous masterpiece.

To first get onto the road of mastery you should visit a Sephora, Ulta, Mac, or Macy's superstore and slowly glide down its aisles, eyes wide open, because this is what real makeup looks like. Then, stop an advisor and ask what products would suit your lifestyle; don’t assume that she knows what kind of look you want, tell her and BE SPECIFIC. Ladies, I can’t stress this enough, don't knock specific beauty products. Never say "I can't" when it comes to makeup. As an Ulta beauty advisor I get a lot of, "Foundation makes me look old," or "I want all matte shadows, shimmers never look good," No offense to those of you who have used these lines but both are invalid; I will explain why later.

After you understand how to use the products you are about to purchase, don’t forget about the brushes. Who would Picasso be without his tools? Just like painting, carpentry, or tennis, the quality of tools you use can make or break you. Also, using the correct brush depending on what kind of look you are going for is extremely important. And this doesn't mean the most expensive. Real Techniques and Morphe brushes (my holy grail) are very affordable.

Once you've got the brushes and the products, set up a mirror in a setting with natural lighting (a window-sill is perfect). Here comes the scary part where you ask yourself: where do I start? Now, I could answer that by firing a million questions back at you like: what kind of skin do you have? What kind of look do you want? Do you like a natural look? Or are you going for the dramatic eye? This is why the most important thing to know about makeup is that it is multifaceted. It conceals and enhances. If you are trying to hide, then makeup won’t enhance your natural beauty, it will conceal your insecurities. However, if you appreciate makeup as an art, then you can see how beautiful and fun it is and everything it can do to make you feel beautiful too. I can’t stand some people who think of makeup as a disguise and judge the girls who actually are quite skillful at applying it. Makeup isn’t poison; learn how to do it properly and you can complete a look. But if you’re that person who applies bronzer to your whole face because you want to be tan, I do not applaud you.
